The CHMSL provides a redundant stop light signal in the event of a stop lamp malfunction. A central stop (brake) lamp mounted higher than the vehicle's left and right stop lamps and called a "center high mount stop lamp (CHMSL)". It is also sometimes referred to as the "center brake lamp", the "third brake light", the "eye-level brake lamp", the "safety brake lamp", or the "high-level brake lamp". A light emitting diode which emits light when activated. A "Light Emitting Diode" is an electronic light bulb of sorts that produces colored light. An LED is often small in area (less than 1 mm2) and integrated optical components may be used to shape its radiation pattern. It is used in the center high mounted stop light on many vehicles, and used as indicator lights in some instrumentation. LEDs are also used in some vehicle speed sensors and in some electronic ignitions. LED lighting offers some key advantages when compared to the old-fashioned ones, including reduced energy use, reduced heat generation, improve driving safety, and increased life expectancy.
